A search of Sociological Abstracts conducted in 1995 yielded more than 300 studies of Sociology, as conceived by G.Simmel, did not pretend to usurp the subject matter of economics [1], ethics, psychology, or historiography; rather, it concentrated on the forms of interactions that underlie political, economic, religious, and sexual behavior. In Simmel's perspective a host of otherwise distinct human phenomena This article studies Georg Simmel’s contribution to the sociology of crowds. The aim of the article is (1) to demonstrate the importance Simmel ascribed to the crowd topic, (2) to illustrate how his early view on crowds was inspired by the work of the major crowd theorists of his time, and (3) to reconstruct a vitalist image of crowds from Simmel’s later thought. Three phases in the diffusion of Simmel's thought within the American sociological community are identified.
